Driver Accused of Deadly Springfield Hit and Run Arraigned
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A man accused of causing a deadly accident over the weekend has appeared before a judge.
25-year-old Mark Perez was arraigned in Springfield District Court Monday on charges of possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of an accident, and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
Around 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Springfield Police allege that Perez was behind the wheel of a stolen Jeep when it hit a Pontiac sedan at the corner of Chestnut Street and Carew Street, causing the Pontiac to go up onto the sidewalk.
The Jeep was seen by witnesses fleeing the scene.
The driver of the Pontiac, 59-year-old Dennis O’Connor of Westfield, was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash.
O’Connor’s passenger, 55-year-old Jeanne Mclain of Westfield, died as a result of her injuries.
Police later located the Jeep and Perez at a home on Narragansett Street.
Perez is being held on $250,000 cash bail and is due back in court in May.
The accident remains under investigation
