SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Today was World Autism Awareness Day and child psychologists right here in Western Mass. say awareness is increasing.

Doctor Bruce Waslick at Baystate Medical Center says as many as 1 in 50 kids have autism which is much higher than decades ago.

But he says there’s also new understanding of the disorder which has been good for kids who have it.

Waslick told us, “It’s led to a lot of attention on the national level, led to more kids being recognized at an earlier time, a lot more resources devoted to finding the causes of autism and developing effective treatments.”

Meantime, Holyoke City Hall and the city’s fire stations will be lit up blue for the rest of April to mark Autism Awareness Month.
