WILBRAHAM, Mass (WGGB)- The spring time means that snow has disappeared from the ground and the sunshine is very strong. This is all a pleasant change, but the solar heat combined with low humidity and wind- dries the dead grass, leaves, and brush on the ground. This serves as fuel for brush fires. April and May is a high-risk time of year for brush fires to occur.
Knowing that we are at risk, it’s a good idea to know some of the causes. Fire Chief and Emergency Manager of the town of Wilbraham, Francis Nothe, says that these fires can be prevented. “Dispose of cigarettes properly, extinguish campfires, avoid parking your vehicle on dry, grassy areas because the hot exhaust can ignite the brush,” he recommends.
Brush Fires spread rapidly. If you see one call 911 so responders can contain the flames.
