New bird flu strain causes fourth death in China
BEIJING (AP) — A strain of bird flu not known to infect humans until recently has caused a fourth death in China, with 11 people now confirmed as having contracted the virus.
The Shanghai city government said Thursday that a 48-year-old man is the latest to die from the virus, known as H7N9. The man was described as having transported chickens and ducks, and had direct contact with fowl that may carry the virus.
It’s not known how people are becoming sick with the virus. Health officials and scientists caution that there are no indications the virus can be transmitted from one person to another.
Experts only identified the first cases on Sunday. Some among the 11 confirmed cases fell ill several weeks ago but only now are being classified as having H7N9.
