Rep. DeLeo Speaks on Transportation Bill and the Governor’s Threat to Veto It

Speaker DeLeo Fundraiser FFSPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Tonight Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo is speaking out about the Governor’s threat to veto his proposed transportation bill.

DeLeo’s proposal included a cigarette and gas tax hike to pay for transportation improvements in the state. ¬†Senate President Therese Murray helped DeLeo draft the proposal.

The Governor had previously proposed raising income taxes for such projects.

DeLeo says he’s disappointed in the Governor’s response to his plan and says he’s just looking out for what he thinks is best for taxpayers.

“We share the same goals, but we are concerned, but on the other hand, we’re concerned about asking people, with the economy being what it is, for a 2 billion dollar tax hike,” he explains.

The Massachusetts House is scheduled to vote on DeLeo’s proposal on Monday.

I would need to pass the House and the Senate before ending up on the Governor’s desk.
