Scituate Set to Vote on Wind Turbine’s Future

power-WindmillsSCITUATE, Mass. (AP) — Scituate residents will vote on the future of a wind turbine that’s been operating for just 13 months.

The Boston Globe reports that a town meeting on Tuesday will ask residents to rescind a special permit of turbine operator Scituate Wind LLC that operates the 400-foot-tall turbine.

Town officials say they’re not obligated to follow the vote.

Gordon Deane, president of Palmer Capital and owner of the turbine, says Scituate Wind and the Board of Health are studying issues related to sound and advised residents to seek to reduce impacts of any problems rather than take what he called precipitous action that will result in legal costs

Some residents have complained of sleeplessness, dizziness and headaches since the turbine began operating in March 2012. It supplies half of the town’s municipal power.
