SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — With Tuesday’s mild temperatures, a lot of people likely thought about opening their windows.
That is the exact reason why state health officials are putting out a warning to parents.
They say each year, an estimated 4,700 children are hospitalized after falling out of windows.
“They’ve had multiple cases here [at Baystate] just in the last couple of years, including a fatal, and also, nationally, in the last week, there have been five cases,” says Lewis Howe, with SAFE KIDS Coalition of Massachusetts.
Experts say window screens are great for keeping bugs out, but they aren’t strong enough to keep kids in.
They highly recommend installing window guards, which are easy to install and easy remove in case of emergency.
