Your Money Monday: Shred It Event

photo (1)SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (wggb) — Today’s Your Money Monday is all about protecting your identity and plenty of people from all over the area have already stopped by our parking lot to avoid having their identity stole.

The event has been going strong with people arriving well before our noon start time. The cars sometimes backed up just waiting for places to park. Some like Chris Einhaus arrived with a decade’s worth of documents to shred.

“Old bank statements, credit card statements, canceled checks, stuff like that, medical bills,” were just some of the items Chris said he brought.

Other’s brought different items.

“I have some bank notes, account numbers, tax forms, general things, anything with a social security number numbers on pay stubs things like that,” said Vincent Jennetti of Springfield.

Old tax documents, to bank statements even medical bills, people are shredding anything that can put them at risk for identity theft. And that was just the danger on everyone’s mind.

“There’s you know nowadays people aren’t supposed to go in your recycling cans you know there is a law but people still do it. adn you never know who’s going to get their hands on it and use it in the wrong way,” explained Vincent.

Dumpster diving is one of the main ways that an identity theif can assume your name. But by shredding documents at an event like this, you can rest assured you won’t be a victim. A reality that was not lost on those that participated today.

Stan from Longmeadow said,”this is great, this is the best thing that you guys could do for the local people.”
