Suspicious Truck Forces Evacuation of Hampshire Mall

HADLEY, Mass. (WGGB) — A truck outside the Hampshire Mall prompted a lock-down and then an evacuation of the building this afternoon.

Hadley police say they became suspicious after a Ryder truck was parked overnight Saturday outside the mall and remained abandoned thru the morning.

Police and Fire crews from Hadley responded… as well as State Police… first keeping customers inside the mall for safety – then evacuating them outside and away from the truck.

Many were unable to get to their cars after leaving the movie theater… and were forced to wait while the bomb and arson squad inspected the vehicle.

For some – in light of the recent Boston bombing – it was a tense afternoon.

“I’m a little concerned to go with my family to places where there’s large crowds gathering,” said Tom Kularski of Ware. “It seems that’s where all the problems are occurring. So as far as going to the movies, you know you wouldn’t think anything like that could happen but I guess it could happen any place.”

Police deemed the Ryder truck safe and towed it away.

The mall noted on its Facebook page that Target, Cinemark, and Arizona Pizza Company have since reopened for the night, and the entire mall will resume normal business hours Monday.
