SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The Springfield Department of Public Works, Fire Department, Police Department and the Department of Parks and Buildings teamed up to address the tornado debris in Water Shops Pond today. Mayor Domenic Sarno called for volunteers to help.

State workers and volunteers as well as neighbors turned out for the event to remove debris from the water.

They also worked to remove trash barrels, garbage and large tree branches using police rescue boats, ropes and tractors, with much of the debris having dumped in the pond by the June 1, 2011 tornado.

Approximately fifty volunteers came out to help and afterwards enjoyed a barbecue together.

I am surprised that one of the casino’s did not offer to help or fund the clean up. That would have been a feather in their cap
