Falcons Pull Out Another Overtime ThrillerSPRINGFIELD (WGGB) — The Springfield Falcons are making the most out of their first playoff appearance in a decade. After an overtime victory in last night’s Game 1, the Falcons kept things interesting for the hometown fans.
Just as in Saturday’s game, Cody Bass was the hero for Springfield in Sunday’s Game 2. The Falcons and Monarchs carried a 2-2 tie nearly 19 minutes into overtime before Bass backhanded a rebound home to give the Falcons a 2-0 series lead.
It was the Falcons’ longest game in team history, surpassing a 1997 Falcons win over Portland that lasted 14 minutes into overtime.
Springfield got out to an early lead when Trent Vogelhuber scored on a shorthanded breakaway, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Monarchs followed with two consecutive goals to put the Falcons behind come the third period.
That was until David Savard netted a slap-shot from the left circle to tie it up at 2-2. After a long overtime, Bass connected on his second overtime game-winner in as many days.
Falcons prevail, 3-2, to take a 2-0 series lead.
