SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) –Arif Turgat is working the first shift at Empire Pizza since a worker was robbed by a homeless man, robert Owens, while making a delivery early Sunday morning. “The weird thing is, the person who got robbed last night, he worked here yesterday. Yesterday was his first day,” Turgat said.
Springfield police say officers were patrolling Avon Place around 1am Sunday morning when they saw Owens pushing the delivery man with a gun.
Officers spotted Owens, and went after him, and that’s when he took off.
They called in the k-9 unit, and arrested Owens a short time later.
Arif says these types of situations that make his job dangerous. “The city is pretty unsafe for us. Every night we work in danger. After we’re done, we thank God we are safe and we are good to go back home, and we don’t know about the next night,” he shared.
Although Owens is in custody, that doesn’t really bring Arif piece of mind. “If they’re prepared to do something, there’s nothing we can do about it. We don’t have any money, $20. For change for the customers. They think we have all this money but we don’t,” Arif stated.
Owens faces several charges, including felony firearms possession, and carrying without a license.
