Suspicious Bag in Northampton Prompts Road Closure

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB) — The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was called in to investigate two suspicious packages in Northampton Monday morning.

The first call came in around 9:00 a.m. when a business owner spotted an unattended duffel bag on North Maple Street.

The bomb squad used an x-ray to determine the bag was filled with clothing and posed no threat to the community.

“After what happened in Boston, I mean we don’t take anything for granted, you know we treat every package that comes in like this — like it has the potential to be explosive,” says Northampton Fire Deputy Chief John Davine. “Our protocol says we call the State Police Bomb Squad, so we treat them all the same.”

Moments after the scene was cleared on North Maple Street, the bomb squad was called to Main Street to inspect a suspicious backpack. They quickly determined that bag also posed no threat to the public.
