14,000 People Take Part in World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) –The weather didn’t keep people away from the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast.

“It’s super crazy. We’re one of the first booths to start serving, and we’re definitely one of the last the keep serving,” said volunteer Juan Gonzalez

Juan should know, since he’s been volunteering at the breakfast for the last 13 years.

“We always run out of something. One year it was no bacon. That was like 3 years ago, last year we ran out of plates, napkins, this year it looks like it’s so successful, we’re running out of batter. We’re going to do so like Jesus, and multiply it like the fish,” Juan laughed.

As the smell of pancakes and bacon wafted down Springfield’s Main Street, people waited on lines for up to an hour and a half just to say they’ve been a part of the record setting event, proud of the positive light it sheds on their city.

“Makes me feel good. Tells me that people are still willing to come out of their houses even though a lot of violence happens in the city, but, it’s wonderful to see families out here,” shared Roberto Hernandez.

First time volunteers like Tucker love it so much, they’ll be sure to sign back up again next year “Definitely meeting nice people like you, and the residents of the community, it’s great”, he chimed.

Event organizer Judy Matt says about 14,000 people were served, just about the same as last year.

All of the leftover juice and milk are donated to local shelters, including Friends of the Homeless and the Springfield Rescue Mission.
