Dozens of Headstones at a Springfield Cemetery Vandalized

Cemetery VandalSPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Vandals hit a cemetery in Springfield Sunday.

About 50 headstones were toppled at the Oak Grove Cemetery, according to the facilities superintendent John Huffman.

It was discovered by someone on Mother’s Day.

“It’s most definitely hard to see this happen,” said Huffman.

Huffman has worked at the cemetery all his life and says he hasn’t seen vandalism this bad since the 1960’s.

“It’s disrespectful to the families, the individuals. It’s like you went into your home and somebody had broken in and ransacked it. That’s what it’s like to come here and see this,” said Huffman.

He believes it was more than one person since the graves are very heavy to move.

Most of the headstones have been repaired. Huffman says crews and Baystate Monument worked hard to make the repairs. He adds it cuts into the cemetery’s everyday maintenance and preparing for burials.

“Hopefully we can find out somebody that did it,” said Huffman.
