Viagra and other risky drugs are often the secret ingredients in ‘natural’ sex supplements

Think “natural” sex supplements are safer than prescription drugs like Cialis and Viagra? In many cases, the answer is no, and for a simple reason: The supplements sold online are often spiked with the real thing.

Those adulterated supplements can actually be more dangerous than the drug, since supplements are largely unregulated, the dosages often vary widely, the side effects are unanticipated, drug interactions are common, and you take them without the oversight of a physician.

Over the past five years, the Food and Drug Administration has identified hundreds of products sold as supplements that were adulterated with active drug ingredients or other risky chemicals, according to an article published yesterday in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Last Friday, for example, the FDA warned that the supplements SexVoltz, Velextra, and Amerect were being recalled due to undeclared tadalafil, the active medication in Cialis.
