Ride of Silence Honors Cyclists Killed in Westfield

Westfield Silent RideWESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Tonight a Ride of Silence honored two cyclists who were killed on the same Westfield Street in the past year.

Former Westfield Sate coach John Kurty was riding on Western Ave. when he was killed in November of 2012.

Howard Beardslee was also riding his bike on Western Ave. when he was killed in January.

The organizer of the 7 mile ride says it has many meanings.

“The idea of the ride, in addition to being a memorial for the cyclists who have been killed, is to raise awareness for both the bike riders and motorists to share the road,” says Don Podolski with New Horizons Bike Shop.

Several dozen riders were escorted by police through downtown Westfield and up Western Ave.
