Columbia Gas Crew Caused Water Main Break that Sent Water Shooting High into the Sky

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A water main break in Springfield Wednesday created quite the scene.

The main let go just after noon near Union and Maple Streets in Springfield after Columbia Gas crews ruptured it while they were working on the line.

Andrea Luppi with Columbia Gas told us, “Workers were trying to remove concrete from on top of the water main when the pipe ruptured.  No disruption of service of gas or water to any residents in the area though.”

The pressure sent the water shooting dozens of feet in the air.

George Roman, field service director for the Springfield Water and Sewer Department, says that the water has been shut off, but no customers are affected.

Right now, Romano says that the department is currently working to coordinate repair work with other utilities in the area. Most of the work, he believes, will be done at night due to the volume of traffic in area.
