MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — Officials in Washington state performed a special inspection six months ago on the Interstate 5 bridge that collapsed because there were indications it had been struck by a different vehicle.

An inspection report released Friday by the state Department of Transportation says inspectors brought in a bucket truck to examine the structure and identified tears, deformations and gouges on the northbound side of the bridge.

The report says the special checkup was done due to “impact damage,” although state officials did not respond to a phone call seeking more detail.

The inspection report also details a variety of other problems with the bridge, including vegetation growing in panels, and rust. It also summarizes a variety of parts on the bridge that have been subjected to “high-load” hits.

They knew about this SIX months????? These inspectors should be fired, and criminal charges filed.

People need to take their jobs more seriously.

What difference does it make, really, that the inspectors knew? Why should they be fired or charged? I’m sure they didn’t keep it to themselves. They don’t get to make the call whether the problems they find are addressed. Bridges in every town all over the country are inspected and flagged as unsafe. Unfortunately, there’s more profit to be made building bombs than rebuilding bridges.

I can’t believe I am explaining something so simple. These jerks are public officals in charge of insuring our roads and bridges are safe, and they did not do their jobs. Bridges in this shape need to be closed, not wait until they fall into the river with cars and people aboard. IMHO the public would rather sit thru traffic jams caused by closed bridges, than to fall to their death and drowned. If these people who are paid BY US, to PROTECT US from this kind of incident like this fail to do their jobs, they get charged with negligence and criminal charges when people die. At least post signs saying the bridge is in imminent danger of collapse, and use at your own risk. Instead they did nothing.
Yes, they should be in jail, not running a pool on how many will drown.

But I certainly agree about the bombs part. The illegal war the chimp got us into is our budget downfall, and he stole 33 TRILLION DOLLARS FROM THE US TREASURY the day before 9/11 occurred, WHICH by coincidence is the exact number we are now in the hole for. Did anyone question that AT ALL? NO, because he created a big enough diversion within 12 hours of the announcement to make us all forget about the 33 trillion dollars. That isn’t even counting Bush sacking the SSA fund, that now they are going to cut benefits. Our government was full of thieves and criminals by a man never elected by us. By cutting the poor, disabled, and vets funds the crime rate can only rise. Desperate people do desperate things.
