Bees Swarm Big Y in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB) — A scary sight this evening in Northampton for anyone allergic to bees.

A swarm of bees appeared outside the Big Y on King Street.

At first witnesses say it was just one or two but eventually there were hundreds.

A bee expert was called in to help remove them and she says the quickly-growing mob is common bee behavior.

“They were swarming. Essentially, where they were was probably getting overcrowded, so the queen probably laid a couple of eggs, and they could make it into a queen, but feeding it royal jelly, so then the queen was like ‘alright, let’s go,’ and peaced off, and half of the hive took off with her, and they are over there swarming, and some scout bees were over there looking for a new place to go,” explains Nikki Rice.

She’s also a bee keeper in Hadley and was happy to remove the bees and bring them to her bee farm.
