I-91 North Reopened Following Thurs. Morning Crash and Fire
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB) — All lanes of I-91 Northbound have reopened following an accident and subsequent fire early Thursday.
Around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, State Police say a tractor trailer became involved in an collision with another ‘heavy-duty’ vehicle near mile marker 18, near the scenic overlook, on I-91.
All lanes northbound were closed for several hours Thursday morning, impacting the commute. Over the course of the morning, a few lanes were opened as crews worked to clear the scene.
MassDOT and the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection were also called in to clean up fuel on the highway.
Drivers called the ABC40 newsroom to say they were stuck waiting on the highway for about an hour and could see flames glowing up ahead. People were getting out of their cars and walking around to take pictures.
Around noon, State Police say that all lanes reopened to travel.
Crews will be back out Thursday night to remove the rest of the trailer from the side of the road.
The driver of the tractor trailer sustained some injuries, but the severity of those injuries is not immediately known.
The accident remains under investigation.
