BOSTON (AP) — Mourners will remember former Gov. Argeo Paul Cellucci during a funeral Mass in his hometown of Hudson.

The service at St. Michael Parish Church is scheduled for Friday morning, to be followed by a private burial.

Cellucci died Saturday at age 65. The Republican was praised during a Statehouse tribute Thursday for his compassion, low-key manner and ability to work across the aisle in his heavily Democratic state.

Cellucci was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1977 and never lost another election. He became governor in 1997 and served until 2001, when he was chosen by President George W. Bush to become ambassador to Canada.

Cellucci disclosed in January 2011 that he had ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He spent much of his remaining life working to find a cure for the condition.
