Two People Injured Following Serious Crash on Roosevelt Avenue

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Two people were hurt after a two car crash Friday afternoon in Springfield.

The two-car crash occurred just before 3:00 p.m. Friday on Roosevelt Avenue, near Gaucher Street and the St. James Avenue overpass.

The force of the crash sent one of the cars into a light pole.

Dennis Leger, aide to Springfield’s fire commissioner, says that it took about 15 minutes to get the driver of that car, a Nissan Altima, out of the vehicle using the Jaws of Life.

That person was taken to Baystate Medical Center with what are being described as serious injuries.

The driver of the other car was also taken to the hospital, but the severity of that person’s injuries is not immediately known.

The accident remains under investigation.

That portion of Roosevelt Avenue, which has been closed for about two hours, is expected to reopen around 5:30 p.m.

I actually witnessed this accident. Happened right infront of my eyes. I called 911. The car that is pictured actually fell off the bridge. People came running over. The car in front of me swerved to the left side of the road into oncoming traffic and got out to help. I hope theyre okay. I had my baby in the car and if I wouldnt have stopped they would have crashed into us. Was scary. Glad everyone who got out to help. Again to the people im sorry I didnt get out to help I had my baby in the car.
