NICU Babies and Families Reunite with Doctors

NICU reunionSPRINGFIELD, Mass. (wggb) — Saturday hundreds of parents and their NICU “graduates” reunited with the doctors and nurses who cared for them during the first days and months of their lives while at the Davis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Baystate Children’s Hospital.

The celebratory and often emotional annual event gave parents an opportunity to show off their NICU babies, some of whom are already in school. It also gave families an opportunity to reconnect with other families they may have met while spending their days and nights in the NICU.

Baystate Children’s Hospital’s regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides specialized care for the tiniest premature infants and critically-ill babies born throughout Western Massachusetts.

Both of my wife’s pregnancies were high risk. We scraped by both times to make it full term. However, they had us tour the NICU just to be prepared. It’s a very humbling and emotional place. Even though we didn’t end up there, much gratitude and respect for the NICU team and all they endure. And much congratulations to the families that have survived the emotionally and physically exhausting experience of the NICU. Great love and sorrow for those that have not.
