SNAP Challenge Ends

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Last Wednesday Massachusetts Health and Human Services Secretary, John Polanowicz, his wife Kathleen, and daughter Emily began the SNAP challenge living only on $31.50 for a week.

They chronicled nearly every step of the challenge on twitter, hoping to show how hard it is for those living on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to eat a healthy, balanced meal every day.

“It was challenging.  Rounding out, we’ve got $4 left out of the $94 and not really much left.  We’re certainly working with Congressman McGovern as this bill is moving through the house and depending on what comes out in the Senate, to weigh in on the impact of these cuts.  While we’re trying to enhance the program for those in need, and ensure that those who need the benefit are getting it, and those who don’t are off it,” explains Polanowicz.

Once automatic cuts from the American Recovery Investment Act go into effect on October 1, they threaten to slash $25 more from a family’s monthly SNAP allotment.
