Otis Drowning Victim Identified

OTIS, Mass. (WGGB) — Investigators have released the identity of a man who drowned in the Otis Reservoir.

Fred Lantz, spokesperson for the Berkshire County District Attorney’s office, says that Sunday afternoon, 22-year-old Derrick Vonberg Jr. of East Otis had gone under the water.

Police told ABC40 Sunday that it was believed that Vonberg Jr. was not able to swim.

Lantz adds that Vonberg’s father, Derrick Sr., tried to save his son, but was unsuccessful. The elder Vonberg himself had to be pulled from the water by a boater who went to the area to help.

The medical examiner’s office determined that Vonberg Jr. died of an accidental drowning.

Derrick was a damn good kid. With a decent head on his shoulders. He had a son and had a future. Alot of people will miss him. My heart is with his family and close friends right now. So sad to see a kid I went to high school end up passing in such a tragedy. RIP kid you will be missed.
