CHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB) — A closed Chicopee bridge will be re-opening a lot earlier than anticipated.
Work on the Davitt Bridge in downtown Chicopee is being completed a year ahead of schedule.
The deteriorating structure was closed last May for rebuilding. The project choked off a vital link to the downtown area.
“It’s just more of an inconvenience and an annoyance than anything else so thankfully that will be gone and things will pick up,” says Jessica Pysz, office manager of the Herbarium.
Pysz can’t wait for the re-opening.
“We joke that we are the best kept secret in the valley because people who have lived here 30 years don’t know who we are so to tell them we have the direct route across the bridge re-opened to us is going to be a lot easier,” says Pysz.
A longer work week for the construction crews helped move the timetable along quicker .
The chamber of commerce which worked to keep the downtown on everyone’s radar during the bridge closing also monitored business activity.
“We did a survey and 9 out of 10 businesses were not hurt by it,” says Gail Sherman, President of the Greater Chicopee Chamber of Commerce.
Sherman says the city plans on celebrating the bridge re-opening.
“We’re going to do things like sidewalk sales, and get people on the street with banners and flyers and special discounts either the day the bridge opens or that weekend,” says Sherman.
Chicopee State Representative Joseph Wagner tells ABC40 that paving on the bridge should be completed on Saturday and the bridge could re-open as early as Monday.
