PALMER, Mass. (AP/WGGB) – Mohegan Sun has unveiled renderings of its new, more elaborate plans for a casino in Palmer Monday evening.
The Connecticut casino’s executives are at Palmer High School now presenting their $1 billion proposal to residents.
The updated plans include an indoor and outdoor water park, featuring kayaking and zip-lining. The parks would be connected to an additional hotel.
“There is nothing like this in the state of Massachusetts,” said Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum, Mohegan Sun Tribal Council.
“It’s a spectacle, it is much more of a destination. There is so many attracting factors in this,” said Mitchell Etess, CEO Mohegan Sun.
152 acres has been slated for the project just off the Massachusetts Turnpike.
The proposal includes a casino featuring 3,000 slots, 16 poker tables and 80 table games. A hotel casino will have 250 rooms, a spa, pool and fitness center. A separate adventure park hotel will have 300 rooms and an indoor park.
Mohegan Sun’s original proposal came in at about $600 million. But the company announced hundreds of millions of dollars in new amenities earlier this month, as it competes for the state’s lone casino license in western Massachusetts.
“We have had a chance to study what the gaming commission is looking for, to listen to what their saying about wow factor, a driving destination resort of being part of the community,” said Etess.
Town Councilor Paul Burns is pleased with the design expansion.
“Obviously there is a commitment to compete with MGM and Hard Rock and I think they compete looking at these renderings. I think it’s more impressive than what you’ll see in Springfield or West Springfield, said Burns.
The company hopes to have a host agreement finalized with the town by July 15th. They’re hoping that allows for a referendum vote on September 15th.
The other contenders are MGM Resorts International which is looking to build a casino in downtown Springfield, and Hard Rock International which has proposed a location in West Springfield.
