CHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB) — Much to the delight of drivers, the Davitt Memorial Bridge re-opened Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. 14 months ahead of schedule.
The project costs $8.2 million to replace the bridge that carries Route 116 over the Chicopee River and rehabilitate Route 116 (Springfield Street) over the Dwight Manufacturer’s Canal.
Mayor Bissonnette’s posted on Facebook Wednesday, “Northern Construction has just called~~~Ladies and Gentlemen, The Davitt Bridge opens at 5 pm ! Happy 4th of July !”
The deteriorating structure was closed last May for rebuilding after it was found to be in bad shape. The project choked off a vital link to the downtown area.
