FITCHBURG, Mass. (AP) — An 8-year-old Fitchburg boy is being credited with saving his father after their car crashed through a guardrail and landed upside down on a sandbar in the middle of a river.

Authorities say Eugenio Garcia was trapped in the vehicle in the Nashua River after the crash at about 3 a.m. Thursday.

But his son, 8-year-old Joshua, wriggled out the wreckage, waded through the rushing water, scaled an embankment, then walked more than half a mile home to alert his mother, who called 911.

Eugenio Garcia was saved at about 3:30, then treated and released from a hospital for minor injuries.

Fire officials say if the car had landed in the water, both likely would have died.

The crash remains under investigation.

Smart, resilient child! Did the dad fall asleep at the wheel?

  • Nyrebel9

The idiot was drunk! What a horrible father! Thankfully the son was not killed or severely injured. Why did he have his son at 3am? He is not a man or a caring father to endanger his son. If you are going to be reckless, leave your child at home. He didn’t, deserve to be put in danger. That brave little boy had to step up to and be mature to get help. He was the adult, obviously not his dad. I am so glad the child survived that horrible ordeal!
