Chicopee Woman on ABC’s “Extreme Weight Loss” Show Shares Her Experience

extreme weight loss FFCHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB) — We introduced you to Chicopee’s Jami Witherell Tuesday night. Her journey to get healthy was featured on ABC’s “Extreme Weight Loss.”

Well on Wednesday we met up with Jami to hear first-hand about her experience.

When she was selected to be a part of the show, Jami was thrown right away into the spotlight, even though deep down she was in a very dark place.

“I remember my production team coming and saying you have to look in the mirror, and it was so painful and I couldn’t voice it so I just started to cry.  I felt like I was on the level of a piece of trash so I couldn’t look at the mirror to see a piece of trash or a monster,” says Jami.

But her final step on the scale told it all with the number 292.  She had nearly cut in half her weight with a total loss of 130 pounds in a year.

However, the hour long episode doesn’t even begin to show all of the hard work and dedication she put in because every single day she would run 6 miles to the CrossFit Firestorm gym located on Chicopee Street in Chicopee.

“The people that are in this gym are like my home trainers.  These are the people that when Chris was away or not able to be with me they were with me through the trenches on the days I thought there is no way I could do this,” explains Jami.

ABC40’s own Brittany Decker spoke with her Wednesday and was even taught “The Jami” a workout named just after her.  It’s one you can’t get through very quickly, which is symbolic of her journey.

“So when you do “The Jamie” you are like oh my gosh this is taking forever. But then when you’re finished with it you have that feeling of accomplishment, ” notes Jami.

The combination of exercise, healthy eating, and therapy meant losing pounds and gaining self-worth.

“And now I’m somebody who believes I matter in the world!” she adds.

For that Jami will now pay it forward, right here in western Mass.

“If it means coming here every day at CrossFit Firestorm and helps other people want to be motivated to continue to work out I’m going to keep doing it,” says Jami.

Through the show she not only lost the weight but she was also able to reunite with her birth mother in Chile.
