Governor Hopefuls Gather at Mass. Dem. Convention

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Democrats from across Massachusetts are gathering for their annual convention in Lowell, yet the real focus will be on potential candidates for next year’s governor’s race.

Declared candidates include Cape Cod state Sen. Dan Wolf, Newton pediatrician Joseph Berwick and Joseph Avellone, a former Wellesley selectman.

That list could grow by at least one at Saturday’s convention. State Treasurer Steven Grossman has indicated he’ll use the gathering to declare his candidacy.

Other possible candidates are expected to use the convention to try to gauge support.

Attorney General Martha Coakley will address the convention, but isn’t expected to declare herself a candidate, yet.

Other possible candidates for governor include U.S. Reps. Michael Capuano and Stephen Lynch, Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, state Environmental Secretary Richard Sullivan and Juliette Kayyem, former Massachusetts homeland security undersecretary.
