Cooling Centers Open for Those Seeking Relief

REGION (WGGB) — Cooling centers are opening across the area, as temperatures climb into the 90′s.

Forecasts indicate that the region is heading into another heat wave. With hot temperatures and the elevated humidity, the heat index could make it feel like it’s over 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service has also issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Hampden County from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, while Franklin and Hampshire Counties are under Heat Advisory until 7:00 p.m.

Cooling centers have been opened at the following locations:

Huntington – Stanton Hall (24 Russell Rd.)
Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Ludlow – Ludlow Senior Center (37 Chestnut St.)
Friday: Open until 7:30 p.m.

Springfield Public Library – Brightwood branch (359 Plainfield St.)
Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Springfield Public Library – Mason Square branch (765 State St.)
Friday: 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Springfield Public Library – East Springfield branch (21 Osborne Terr.)
Friday: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Springfield Public Library – East Forest Park branch (122 Island Pond Rd.)
Friday: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Springfield Public Library – Pine Point branch (204 Boston Rd.)
Friday: CLOSED due to air conditioning issues.
> Visitors are being directed to Sixteen Acres branch at 1187 Parker Street. Open until 5:00 p.m

Springfield Public Library – Indian Orchard branch (44 Oak St.)
Saturday: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Springfield – Greenleaf Community Center (1188 Parker St.)
Saturday: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Springfield Public Library – Forest Park branch (380 Belmont Ave.)
Saturday: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Springfield Public Library – Sixteen Acres Branch (1187 Parker St.)
Saturday: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Springfield Public Library – Liberty branch (773 Liberty St.)
Saturday: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Officials are warning that heat stress can be dangerous to many, particularly the elderly and those with medical issues, and precautions should be taken to protect yourself from the hot weather.
