Gov. Patrick Vetoes Transportation Bill

BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick has vetoed a massive transportation financing bill approved by the Legislature, saying it is “not good enough.”

In announcing the veto, the governor said Friday that he did so with “mixed emotions” because the current version of the bill does allow for new investment in the state’s transportation network.

Legislative leaders believe they have enough votes in both the House and Senate to override a veto.

Patrick unsuccessfully sought an amendment from lawmakers that would further raise the gas tax to offset the loss of revenue if tolls west of Interstate 95 of the Massachusetts Turnpike come down as scheduled in 2017.

Patrick says the issue has to be dealt with now, not later.

The bill contains $500 million in new taxes.
