Fatal Accident on Mass Pike Caused by Wrong Way Driver

MassPikeCHARLTON, Mass. (WGGB) – The Mass Pike is now open after a major accident this morning had closed down a portion of the highway and resulted in the death of a 66-year-old woman.

According to State Police the three car accident occurred at 4:35 this morning after a toll collector observed a driver entering the westbound lane of the turnpike going East, striking another car.

Police say a 66-year-old female from Toms River, N.J. was deceased on scene and the wrongway driver, a 33-year-old male from Leominster was arrested and transported to UMass Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Another individual was also transported to an area hospital.

Auburn Fire and EMS responded, as well as Millbury and Charlton EMS.

State troopers from the Millbury and Holden Barracks were dispatched to close the turnpike, east of the accident site to avoid additional vehicles from becoming endangered.

State Police continue to investigate.
