SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Springfield Police says 31-year-old Roberto Vasquez is one of those guys who just can’t stay out of trouble.
“He’s been locked up numerous, numerous times by the Springfield Police Department,” says Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney. “Just looking at his paperwork here, he has several restraining orders active against him.”
Many of those restraining orders and warrants come from violent crimes, like the altercation he got into with his girlfriend last September at an apartment near West Street.
“The female victim stated that she has five children with Mr. Vasquez,” says Delaney. “She’s seven months pregnant with his baby, they’ve been having problems on and off and he’s been very violent towards her for several weeks.”
Police say on this particular morning she gave Vasquez some money, which he determined simply wasn’t enough.
“So he started beating her,” says Delaney. “He punched her four times in the head and then pulled a knife out of the kitchen and threatened to kill her.”
The victim told police she tried to get out of the apartment once, but Vasquez managed to lure her back in. Once inside, she says Vasquez became even more violent.
“He threatened to stab her and as he was doing this, he did stab her in the side of the temple,” says Delaney. “He then went a little bit crazy inside the house, throwing things around the apartment.”
Delaney adds, “When he was doing so, he went upstairs to get some of his belongings — this is when the victim took it upon herself to get out, ran next door, the police were called and responded, and Vasquez disappeared.”
