Signs Show Improving Economy

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Some newly-released numbers are showing national and local economies are improving.

A University of Michigan survey finds Americans are more confident in the economy than they’ve been at any time since July 2007.

Locally, employers posted 12% more openings in June than they did a year ago.

Hampden County career centers are reporting they saw an 18% decrease in job seekers from this time last year.

“You can’t ignore the fact that American workers are incredibly productive. So what’s been happening, businesses have been squeezing more out of the workers they already have. America, we’re one of our own worst enemies. We are one of the most productive work forces in the world. We keep getting it done and you add a layer on top of that — technology. So the demand really has to be strong to start taking up that slack, “explains Kevin Lynn who represents FutureWorks Career Center in Springfield.

He says western Mass. is the last part of the state to recover from a bad economy so we should be patient.
