SPRINGFIELD (WGGB) — The West Nile virus has just been detected in Rockland, Mass., which is located south of Boston.
It joins a list of now 18 other Massachusetts communities where West Nile has also been found, including Pittsfield in Western Mass.
In 2012, almost 7,000 mosquito samples throughout the state were tested for West Nile virus, and 307 samples were positive.
Officials say to minimize your risk avoid being outside around dusk and dawn, which are peak times for mosquitoes.
Also, they suggest wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts and use insect repellent.
