Crashes Along I-91 Cause Major Traffic Back-Up
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — I-91 is cleared after two accidents backed up traffic for miles Wednesday night. Emergency personnel responded to a roll over crash on I-91 North at the 2.2 mile marker in Longmeadow right before the Enfield, Conn. border and another crash on I-91 South in that same area an hour later.
We received a number of calls from people who were stuck in traffic on I-91 in Longmeadow, which stretched for as far as 15 miles at some points.
According to the Mass. State Police, the first crash involved multiple vehicles and happened just before 8:30 p.m., between Exit 49 in Enfield and Exit 2 in Springfield.
According to our crew on scene it looked as if four vehicles were involved. The Longmeadow Fire Department responded and crews started working to help clean up the scene.
At around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, another accident occurred in the same area as this roll over crash on the southbound side, backing up traffic in both directions.
State Police report there are injuries, however none appear to be life-threatening.
All lanes of traffic re-opened a few hours afterwards, but ongoing construction on the Longmeadow curve was exacerbating the traffic backup following the accident.
