SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — It was around 2 a.m. on June 30th when officers’ phones started lighting up for several reported disturbances. But, when they arrived at the intersection of Orange and White streets, they soon realized just one woman was to blame.
“When they arrived on the scene, they were greeted by a 27-year-old male victim who was struck in the face and above the eye with a metal pipe by his estranged girlfriend,” says Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.
Police say that woman is 24-year-old Deona Chase.
“Officers then went to 145 White Street and they came across Deona Chase,” says Delaney. “Speaking to the victim and talking to witnesses that were on the corner at the time state that Deona Chase did, in fact, hit the 27-year-old male several times in the head with the pipe.”
The victim was taken to the hospital and Chase was taken into custody.
A look at her record reveals this isn’t her only violent offense. Last June, Chase and her sister ran into a woman they recognized on Maynard Street and an argument ensued.
“Chase then punched the victim, causing her to fall to the ground,” says Delaney. “Her pocketbook opened up and the contents of the pocketbook spilled onto the street.”
Delaney adds, “Chase took advantage of the $60 that was lying right there on the street — she took it and took off and police got a warrant for her.”
Police say Chase came close to answering to the most recent assault charge against her, but not close enough.
“She was summonsed to appear in court at a later date and when she did, she got up in the middle of the courtroom and walked out even before she could be heard by a judge,” says Delaney.
Chase used to live on Orange Street, but police say she could be anywhere in Western Mass.
