City, North End Residents Meet to Discuss Riverfront and Sky Bridge

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — On Monday, we told you about residents concerned over the condition of the River Walk in Springfield and those people say today was a step in the right direction.

North End residents and the City of Springfield got together and talked about getting the elevator accessible for disabled people and cleaning up the bike path of debris and overgrown weeds.

They’re happy and optimistic about the outcome of today’s meeting.

“We are talking to Western Mass. Electric, Peter Picknelly, and everybody that owns land around there that we could sit down and really work…we the people…to fix everything up, and clean it up and be a warm, wonderful bike path that everybody can enjoy,” says resident Jose Claudio.

Claudio says they’re working on a plan to have the riverfront trail cleaned up and ready for the beginning of spring.

    YEAH ITS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE TOOK ACTION!!!MY SISTER AND I WENT TO THE BIKE PATH LAST SUMMER 2012 AS WE WALKED ALONG AT ABOUT 3:30PM SUNNY AND HOT AS CAN BE WE GOT MAYBE 10 MINUTES INTO THE BIKE PATH AND WE CAME TO A STOP BECAUSE THEIR WAS A GROUP OF HISPAIC MEN WHO APPEARED TO HAVE MAKE SHIFT TENTS ..BEER BOTTLES STREWN ALONG AND GARBAGE EVERYWHERE..LOOKING LIKE BUMS LIVING HEADQUARTERS!PRETTY SCARY !! NEEDLESS TO SAY WE TURNED BACK AROUND AND RAN OUT OF THERE!!GLAD THAT THE CITY WILL DO SOMETHING NOW!!
