Hotel Fees are On the Rise

(CNN) — Fliers pay for baggage, food, and to change reservations. By now, many travelers are used to the fees, but it goes beyond airlines.

Now, a new study says hotel fees are racking up as well.

Hotel fees are on track to hit a record high: $2.1 billion. That’s how much hotels are expected to rake in this year in fees.

It’s a new forecast from New York University.

Fees are up because more people are traveling.

That’s a good sign for the economy, but hotels are also finding new fees to tack on and the existing fees are rising.

There’s the typical fee for cancellation, and room service, but how about charges for an in-room safe, or to use wi-fi, or to leave early?

Over the past decade, hotel fees have risen almost every year, except during the recession.

These charges tend to show up more at high-end hotels, resorts, and in major cities.

Many mid-priced hotels, which are the most popular, are still offering some freebies, like breakfast and internet.

But analysts say to be careful! Some fees are mandatory.

So be sure to look for special disclosures on your reservation confirmation or look on the website for a section on fees.
