Longtime Springfield Boys and Girls Club Director Retires

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The longtime executive director of the Springfield Boys and Girls Club is stepping down after 26 years on the job.

Gary McCarthy has spent 50 years of service with the club, the last half of his career as director.

As he leaves the job, McCarthy won’t ever forget all the kids the club has helped over these many years.

“We hear a lot of negative things about our kids today, but these kids come in these doors every day because they want to do the right thing. They want to be in the right place, a safe place, where they can learn and enjoy, and meet friends, and that’s a special kid,” says McCarthy.

McCarthy’s replacement was also introduced. She is Sarah Tsitso who has extensive experience in the non-profit field in the Springfield area.

I remember Gary as an activities director at the camp in Brimfield, then camp director. After about 1976 did not see him again until about 1996 when I was at the Boys club signing my son up for camp. Found out he was the director of the boys club, always felt that was his true calling. A great friend to many, I know he saved me from the streets. I will always be great full to him for that. Gary, thanks for all you have done!
