NEW YORK (WGGB) — Boston Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster has been suspended after he threw at Alex Rodriguez on Sunday.

Major League Baseball says that Dempster has received a five game suspension “for intentionally throwing at and hitting” the Yankees third baseman.

Dempster has also been fined an unclosed amount of money, according to the league.

Dempster threw one pitch behind A-Rod’s knees and two more inside at Fenway Park on Sunday. Then his 3-0 pitch struck Rodriguez’s left elbow pad and ricocheted off his back.

The Yankees say that manager Joe Girardi has also received an undisclosed fine for his argument with umpire Brian O’Nora following the pitch. That argument led to Girardi being tossed out of the game.

Dempster could still play if he decides to appeal the penalty.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
