BOSTON (AP) — A lawyer appointed by the Massachusetts governor to review prosecutions connected to a state lab scandal found that the drug cases of more than 40,000 defendants may have been tainted.

David Meier led a file-by-file review of narcotics cases in which former state chemist Annie Dookhan tested samples. He says he will be meeting with prosecutors, defense lawyers and judges to discuss how to best use the findings.

Authorities previously said they believed Dookhan tested samples involving 34,000 defendants.

Authorities say Dookhan tampered with evidence and faked results during her nine years at the now-closed lab. Dookhan has pleaded not guilty to a 27-count indictment on charges from six counties relating to her alleged wrongdoing.
