Firefighters Knock Down Dump Fire on Springfield, Chicopee Line

brush fireSPRINGFIELD, Mass.  (WGGB) — Firefighters from three communities worked to put out a dump fire on the Chicopee, Springfield line.

The Chicopee Fire Department reports they got the call around 4:45 p.m. Friday and the fire was a stubborn one. The dump which is part of a local cemetery according to Dennis Leger aid to the Springfield fire commissioner.

It’s located in the area of Newbury and Moore Streets.

Several calls from people who say they could smell the smoke and see it rising into the sky came into ABC40 shortly before 5:00 p.m.

Our crew who went to the scene around 5:30 p.m. says firefighters were bringing it under control and they weren’t seeing any flames.  But at the time smoke could still be seen pouring out of the dump which was in a gully area in the woods.

Chicopee, Springfield and Ludlow all responded to the fire.  As of 7:10 p.m. the Chicopee Fire Department has remained on scene to keep watch for hot spots.

No word yet on what caused the fire to start.
