EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WGGB)– The Cunningham family of East Longmeadow, along with the Baystate Blood Donor Mobile, is taking steps this weekend to save lives in the Pioneer Valley, and it’s all in the name of their late, beloved family member Laura Cunningham. The blood drive is being held until 4 pm at Heritage Park.
Cunningham passed away on August 29, 2009 at Baystate Medical Center. During her stay at the hospital, she underwent numerous blood transfusions.
After speaking with doctors, the Cunninghams realized the ongoing need for blood donors and thought holding a blood drive would be a great way to give back to the hospital that they say “took such great care of our mother.”
This is the fourth year that the Cunninghams have organized a blood drive to honor Laura’s memory.
At Baystate Medical Center, over 3,000 patients receive more than 29,000 transfusions of blood products each year.
Blood is perishable and has a limited shelf life so there is always a need for donors of all blood types.
During the summer months, there is greater need due to more road accidents.
