Governor Deval Patrick to Attend March on Washington
BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is among those planning to be in Washington to honor the 50th anniversary of a civil rights march that included the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech.
Patrick is traveling to Washington on Saturday for a march from the Lincoln Memorial, where King spoke, to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
Saturday’s march is being led by the Rev. Al Sharpton and King’s son, Martin Luther King III. They will be joined by the parents of Trayvon Martin, and family members of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Chicago boy killed in Mississippi in 1955 after he was accused of flirting with a white woman.
Many other Massachusetts residents also are planning to attend the anniversary of the events considered landmarks in the national civil rights movement.
