Pedestrian Struck by Car in Ludlow has Died
LUDLOW, Mass. (WGGB) — Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a car that hit a pedestrian in Ludlow Wednesday morning.
Ludlow Police say that just before 9:00 a.m., an 81-year-old Ludlow man was driving a 2010 Nissan Rogue northbound on Highland Avenue between East and Birch Streets when he crossed over the center line.
That man’s car then struck another car, a 2004 Honda Accord parked on the southbound side of the road. The Nissan then drove over the sidewalk and hit an 85-year-old woman from Ludlow who was standing there.
Police add that the woman was dragged by the car until the car hit a utility pole. At that point, witnesses in the area began to provide assistance and first aid until emergency crews arrived.
The woman was taken to the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and was later confirmed to have died from her injuries. That’s according to Sergeant Daniel Valadas.
The operator of the motor vehicle was also transported to Baystate for treatment of minor injuries. Sgt. Valadas says they will be filing criminal charges against him tomorrow following review of the complaint. He’ll likely face charges including Reckless Operation and Marked Lanes Violations.
At this time the names of the victim and the driver has not been released.
Police closed down the area to traffic for several hours and both of the vehicles were towed from the scene and placed in impound.
The incident remains under investigation by Ludlow Police and the Mass. State Police as well as the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office.
