Springfield Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the city’s Brightwood neighborhood.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney says that Wednesday afternoon, a male suspect was reportedly involved in a domestic incident on Sanderson Street.
That suspect was allegedly smashing out the windows of another person’s car, with that person still inside the vehicle.
An officer in the area intervened, at which point Delaney adds that the man pulled out a knife.
The officer, whose name has not been released, discharged his weapon and struck the man in the leg.
Delaney notes that the suspect was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His name has not been released.
The officer was not injured.
The park was busy at the time of the shooting.
“I was about to go then I stopped myself cause I heard the boom, boom,” said Ashley Rivera.
“Sometimes I get nervous because my kids play in the park,” said Luz Amador.
Many of the people in the park were kids getting out of the nearby schools.
“Oh yea, this is the path to Chestnut. This is the path I take every morning and the afternoon,” said Lucy Zuniga.
She moved to the city just a week ago and is surprised how close the shooting was to her house.
The incident remains under investigation. Police are expected to release more information Thursday.
